In its pursuit of industry leader Uber, Lyft and Gett recently got a boost from Google Maps, being added to the platform as Uber alternatives.

Google Maps and Lyft Gett

Google Maps has emerged as one of the leading rides booking mobile apps, primarily due to its estimation of fares and waiting times for all the services at the touch of a button.

"Say you're looking to get from the High Line to Times Square in Manhattan. When typing these locations into the Google Maps app, you will see a ride services tab appear alongside driving, transit and walking directions", said Sara Torti, senior product manager of Google Maps. "Just tap the icon and you will find fare estimates and pick up times from multiple ride service partners, depending on driver availability".

Torti also added that the app will show certain services of each partner, and that the Lyft line can be accessed through it.

Google Maps launched these features for Uber in 2014. Uber reportedly is developing its own map system with a $500 million investment, which may end the relationship with Google Maps. For now, the updates for Lyft and Gett are live on both iOS and Android versions of Google Maps. Incidentally, Lyft is becoming more available across various locations spread out in the U.S., whereas Gett is still centric to New York City.

With the new additions, Google Maps is going to make the life of commuters, who bank on ride hailing apps on a daily basis, easier. The addition of Lyft and Gett will also be beneficial because users can choose the most cost effective ride sharing option. Google Maps will be displaying the pricing of the different companies side by side, which also implies that in the future, competing companies may be forced to rethink their prices, leading to overall lower prices.

Google Maps says it now displays pick-up times and fare ranges for nine ride-hail services in 60 countries. Back in March, Google announced it was giving ride-sharing its own tab alongside transit, biking, walking, and driving. Uber was integrated into Maps years ago, but more recent additions include 99Taxis in Brazil, Ola Cabs in India, Hailo in the UK and Spain, and mytaxi in Germany and Spain.

While Maps will only display fare ranges rather than specific prices, it still offers users one of the best ways to compare between Uber and Lyft, which have grown largely indistinguishable.

Uber had previously fought back against attempts by third-party apps to access its open software to offer price comparisons with other services. In June, Uber denied a Boston-based company called Urbanhail access to its API, sparking criticism that Uber was acting in an anti-competitive fashion.

Lyft is pleased with the new exposure it is getting from being included in Google Maps.

“We’re always working to make sure Lyft is where our passengers are — whether that’s in the cities they live or integrated into the apps they use every day,” said a Lyft spokesperson. “Working with Google Maps makes it even easier to seamlessly request a ride with Lyft. From our work with Google Maps to Maps in iOS 10, there’s a clear trend — more and more people are clamoring for ride share transportation options.”
